Interesting, what do you do to make them do this?

Different things work for different species, I also observed individual differences within a single species - some mantises are better "performers" than other; they flip out immediately after taking them out of enclosure and maintain the pose for relatively long time. I usually trigger the response by touching their abdomens or heads with a fine paintbrush. A little mirror worked too in one case. Habituation usually occurs after w while.

Make good subject ideas for the animated movie industry.....

Attack of the dancing Mantises

So you think you can Mantis?

How do you have/keep pet Mantises?

Hi Mike,
I'd sure like to see a production featuring a mantis-based character - the Mantis from Kung Fu Panda is cool (especially with Seth Rogen giving it his voice), but come on - the rendering hardly is doing the real thing any justice :)

Keeping mantises - most species - is easy, they are relatively low maintenance and don't require much space. There is lots of info on that on the net. They are really easily available through online vendors in Europe and in the US:

I really recommend getting one (or a dozen) - they are fun to photograph, very graceful and charismatic models!
