Frankencam - a new focus stacking rig

Post by dudski »

Hello all!

I'd like to start out by saying that absolutely the coolest thing about this site is that it inspires and motivates. Well, that and the fact that there some ridonculous photos on this site!

But seriously, you guys have done just such a great job of creating a very welcoming and helpful community that a first visit to PMN changes one's perspective on photography (and I have a feeling that is irrespective of one's level/abilities or even particular interests).

I'm one of the seemingly MANY who have been lurking around in relative silence, only to be completely awed and captivated by this website, it's photos, the abilities/knowledge/helpfulness of it's members, as the wild
rigs that people have come up with for focus stacking.

Well I'm proud to finally be able to speak up and show my own work which is the fruit of a few months of research, ebay & scap metal hunting, and drilling holes.

But be warned, it is UGLY! That's alright though, as it does everything that is necessary for a good focus stacking rig, and, with the use of a multitude flashes mounted on variable friction arms which can be placed anywhere once a 1/4" hole is drilled and tapped, happens to be extremely versatile.

The main motivation for this guy has been for snowflake photography, hence the ability to use it in vertical orientation. It vibrates a litte bit more than desired in this orientation, but I don't think it is
anything of concern.

I'm running out of time here, so I will come back to label the parts used for this rig (though many of you will recognize the major components). I would also like to take and post of up a few photos with lighting gear all mounted.

Without further ado, I present some photos as well as a first stack (32 photos on Nikon D200, stacked with Zerene Pmax):

Ugly is good. Function before form and all that!

Strange.. they're popping up on my screen.

In case they don't load, here is the link to the galley of images: http://www.pbase.com/damian_turski/focus_stacking

Still no images, even if I refresh the page, but the link works OK.

Dudski, wrong URLs I think looking at the source? Try using

Code: Select all

http://ic2.pbase
rather than

Code: Select all

http://i.pbase

The last 4 SRCs miss the c2 bits. fyi:

Code: Select all

dudski, thanks for the pictures.

Definitely not ugly! I'd go with "utilitarian". ;) Looks good from here.
