Hi !

Wonder about a Zeiss Luminar Zoom 2.5 - 5 i buy some time ago

Then i look in it from back to front - The image is blurry
but if i look from front its sharp

If i take out the first lens at back - the image are sharp
but smaler ( 1/2 Size aprox )

Anyone who have this lens and know how it shall preform
and how the lenses shall sit in it ?

or is this normal for this lens ( do it requre belows and extra lens to
work ) ?

Regards

Are you looking at a close object or into the distance?

Pär,

I am not familiar with the lens but understand it to be a microscope lens. You will need to view through it accordingly.

I mainly asked for clarification for those with appropriate knowledge to be able to comment.

I just filled the gap until the people who really know the answers come online.

Pär,

The zoom version is is not very common and I have no references that mention it. I do have some Luminar PDF info that can be seen here (but these contain nothing on the zoom):
www.krebsmicro.com/Luminars/

If you haven't seen these pages, a few small tidbits of info can be found here:

http://www.the-ultraphot-shop.org.uk/luminar.htm

http://savazzi.freehostia.com/photography/luminarversions.htm

You might also to try to make contact with this gentleman. He has posted here once or twice (some time ago, under the name "fluor_doublet") and apparently has quite a collection of interesting optics, including the Luminar zoom:

Ryoji Tanaka aka fluor_doublet also has a blog, but you will need to translate because it is in Japanese.

Hi Charles & Craig !

Yes this lens are a strange to me

I have contacted thy guy i Japan
it would be very intressting to se the answer

My closes guess now is that the lens demand correction optics to work

Anyway - Thanks for info that i hope solve this matter

Pär,

fluor_doublet did log onto the forum after I sent him a PM, but he obviously did not leave a comment on this forum regarding this discussion. He may still be preparing to do so.

The other person who may know something about your lens is Klaus Schmitt.

Hi Perl,

I did not test the Luminar Zoom myself, but I know it is designed mainly for use on 160 mm finite microscope systems. A 150 mm distance to the sensor will provide the nominal magnification.

I think I remember reading from Klaus that he regards the Luminar Zoom as not useful in photomacrography, but not the specific reason. I have seen a few picture samples taken with this lens and they do not look any worse than the IQ from other Luminars. The zoom ratio is not so big, however.

For a while I was tempted getting one in order to use the zoom instead of changing the extension (zooming is faster when you have to take a lot of pictures at different magnifications), but this reason went away once I got better/more comfortable photomacrographic zooms, including the Mitutoyo FS-60 and the Zeiss Tessovar.
