Beautiful images!
The lorica (clear and unvalved) has no stalk, so this is not Cothurnia, but Vaginicola.
In that last picture, the elongated macronucleus is wonderfully sharp. |

Yes, and a very photogenic one. It might be possible to identify to species level, if you give dimensions. |

The single zooid does not seem to extend much beyond the rim of its vase, which would suggest Vaginicola grandis. However, the size range you give is too small. V. ingenita is not known to have zoochlorellae.
So...clear lorica, zoochlorellae, under 200 µm: Vaginicola crystallina Ehrenberg, 1830 (until something better comes along ). Normally, you'd find two critters in the jar, but singletons are not unusual.
I have a suspicion that these (very old) taxa are somewhat questionable. The Vaginicolidae seem to be a sleepy branch of ciliatology...Looking over the literature, it strikes me that the family is overdue for a revision! |
