Vertical Microphotography is a far more dangerous exercise for the safety and care of pinned insects than using a Horozontal bench rig.
One has to be aware of this at all times, when using important , scientific, old and even unique TYPE specimens the risk of damage..
I decided on a design to interchange some parts of my" Simple Vertical Stacking Rig using a xy Linear Stage"as seen here:-
http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8857&highlight=
That they then could be used on my " Simple horizontal Rig" to facilitate the following points.
Sitting down to focus, getting twin flashes off camera, side adjustment of x micrometer using a large hand piece for better control.Allowing the use of an Indicating Digital Depth Guage (DRO) for accurate measurement of the x travel.
Back lash (slop/gear pinion excess) is negligible in one direction because of the spring loading on the DRO point, and the clamping of its separate mount on the bed rails.

Len,
This post must have slipped under my radar when originally posted April 24th 2011.
You have implemented some nice features. I especially like the digital readout device for monitoring X axis travel and the larger 'knob' attached to the linear stage actuator.
I know you have further developed your setup since these images were taken but wanted to respond to your post, albeit belatedly.
