I happened across the PBS Nova show "Mystery of a Masterpiece" on television last night. About 2/3 of the way through they showed art historians using stacking to help decide if a sketch possibly by Leonardo da Vinci is authentic. Quite a shout-out for our technology. There was not much detail regarding the equipment or software, but the theory was nicely illustrated.

The same guy that was doing the stacking also had a really nice multispectral scanning camera. They said it could make files of 240mb.
It has a bunch of color filters that obviously went in front of the ccd line array. Mounted on sort of a semicircle. You couldn't tell what kind of objective he was using. Probably a late model german made digital camera lens. Looked like a fixed focal length Schneider or Rodenstock.
Very cool studio.Cool show too.
