Return of the Log Fern Sorus

Leitz Ortholux
EPI illumination
Leitz 3.8X Ultropak Epi objective
5X Nikon CFE projection eyepiece + 1/3X SP relay lens
Top image-28 image stack at .002inch increments
Middle image-26 image stack at .002inch increments
Bottom image, Leitz 6.5X Ultropak Epi objective, same projection optics.
25 image stack at .001 inch increments
Combine ZM, Photoshop

My original image was so much sharper with combine ZM than with my previous software that I brought back an earlier post. I also add some subsequent images, showing the peal back of the sorus skin to expose the spore pods if that’s what they are called. I acknowledge some exposure faults with the bottom image but it shows nicely the pod exposure process. I do intend on soon improving my EPI illumination apparatus.

Very good photos there Walt. I have viewed these before with my microscope, however, I ended up with a stage covered in spores as these things popped open. :D

That is very interesting Ken. What color were the pods when they broke open to release their spores?

They looked like this Walt :D

The little spring like hinges would pop the cases apart and scatter the spores everywhere. A few light colored spherical spores can be seen scattered about in the image. :D

Walter, the shots are excellent. What a beautiful capture. Yours are nice and fresh and then they dry up like Kens shot and release their spores. Now all we need is a shot of a small fern sprouting
