I doubt that. All the pond skaters I have seen are about 99.9% 'aerial' in that it is only their tiny little feet that touch the surface film of the water.Wim van Egmond wrote: I guess they are water repelling enabling the pond skater to practise its sport.

There seems to be no need for a waterproof coat, except perhaps when it rains.
I find the countershading most interesting. The white ventral surface will blend in with the sky, and perhaps surface reflection, when seen by an aquatic predator below the surface whereas the dark dorsal surface will match the dark pond contents when viewed by a predator from above.

Maybe a way to get the countershading colours; perhaps 'easier' than trying to colour the cuticle.Wim van Egmond wrote: So I still wonder if this 'fur' has any purpose.

Hydrofuge hairpiles are small, hydrophobic microhairs. These are tiny hairs with more than one thousand microhairs per millimeter.[5] The entire body is covered by these hairpiles, providing the water strider resistance to splashes or drops of water. These hairs repel the water, preventing drops from weighing down the body.
