This town is on the River Thames. The river has now received an award:

In my childhood I enjoyed family walks along the south bank and in my teens I fished from it, once camping in a famer's field overnight and cooking the fish caught. I have even swum in it, although not often, as in those days polio was a danger and the river was not so clean as it is now. It was a great treat to hire a tiny motorboat for a half hour ride.

More recently, I live with only a water meadow between my back garden and the north bank of the river. In the winter of 2002 we had a foot of river water in part of our garden for one day. My wife sails on a lake divided off from the north bank by about 50 yards. I have spent many a sunny day photographing dragonflies, damsel flies and other insects at the edge of the river.

Here is a website crammed with Thames information. The links from Bray down to about Wallingford are my local territory. The view of Sonning Lock is what we can partially see by looking left from the south bank at the sailing club:

Harold:

Thanks for the on-line tour of the famous Thames.

It was most interesting.
