At last!!!!
The sensor cleaning items arrived and I plucked up enough courage to save myself £30-£50 plus VAT for a professional clean:
First ....after setting the Sony Alpha 300 to cleaning mode to vibrate I used a Rocket puffer to blow away any loose dust then the specially sized pad and cleaning liquid to carefully wipe the sensor twice...once one way...turn the pad over then the other:
This shot proves that all is well...I also took pics of a white wall to check:
Here is where I ordered my cleaning kit from.....it helps a vintage aircraft fund too:

There is enough material for at least 5 sensor cleaning sessions:

the only thing I use for cleaning the sensor is www.sensor-film.com; it looks very scary but leaves a new-looking sensor. I had some trouble with the 5D thoug, as the sensor is quite big and if not carefull sometimes small bits of the product is left on the borders. Anyway I find it a very nice product, you can use it frequently and it is quite fool-proof
