Wasps in flight

Massively frustrating that your bugs in flight are more detailed than my static photos!
Your rig is truly remarkable, and mind-expanding...

Some curiosity-based questions - have you compared notes with fotoopa and his rig? If so, how do they basically differ in concept and purpose? It's impossible for people who aren't electronic or mechanical engineers to assess such matters!

Hi Phil
I have spent some time communicating with Frans. He is orders of magnitude more skilled and advanced than I. Especially in his abilities to manufacture components and design and build electronic systems. Because of my own skill limitations I've mainly focused on using commercially available equipment. So at the heart of my system you will find a dual beam laser triggered StopShot from Cognisys. I encouraged Cognisys to build this system as at the time when I approached them they only had a single beam system for sale. The external shutter, which I made from a computer hard drive was a little more challanging but could be made by most people if guidence was given. Frans has designed and built his system from the ground up (apart from the shutter) and it uses a much more advanced motion detector which avoids the need to have the arms at the front of the unit.
I'm still collaborating with Cognisys and I will soon be testing a new shutter which they plan to commercialise. At the end of the day I've always wanted to enable almost anyone to be able to do this type of photography and this will soon be achieved when Cognisys sell everything needed to make this happen.
Hope that helps
All the best

Re: WOW!
I've been stung many times by wasps, unfortunately I've started to react more to the stings and had to have iv steroid last time I was stung on the face. I now carry an epi-pen with me when do this type of work. I mount the equipment on a truck and use a long pole to move it to the nest entrance to reduce the risk of being attacked.
