It is usual to push a pin through an insect from the dorsal surface, later the pin image can be cloned out but some pixel-peepers may see
indications of the damage.
It is not always necessary to pin through an insect. One can insert a pin from the underside being careful not to exit on the top surface.
Here is a local ground beetle after being 'set' on a piece of balsa and after all the positioning pins have been removed.
Beetle still needs some cleaning before a final (dorsal) image.
