NU, I just found another picture of the biting flies. This one might be a little better. This one was on the car's outer door handle.

That is a decent photo. Another species of Hybomitra but I can't identify it to species :cry:
There are about 55 species of Hybomitra in NA but no all occur in the west.
Note in the 1st image the patch immediately above the antennae is hairy, in the 2nd fly it is shiny black. Also eye banding and body colours are different.
A side view of the head is useful for identifying species.
