Charles, Here is a full frame shot. No lens, no adapter, just shot down through that dusty lens pictured above. It's even in focus, more or less. 4x used. I had to clean up the WB, it was very red.
Rik, I will try that tomorrow. I'm winding down now.
A Single and Double Diatom
Moderators: rjlittlefield, ChrisR, Chris S., Pau
I have recently photographed a diatom similar to your 2nd image,
I measured it as 188 microns (0.188 mm).
If your 1st diatom was similar in size to your second then its length could be
117 microns

Quote – Holmes on ‘Entomology’
” I suppose you are an entomologist ? “
” Not quite so ambitious as that, sir. I should like to put my eyes on the individual entitled to that name.
No man can be truly called an entomologist,
sir; the subject is too vast for any single human intelligence to grasp.”

NU, no, that first one was only about 1/4 to 1/3 as long as the second one. The second one, would not fit in the frame at higher magnification. In fact, in that third image, the one with the double, there is a single one at the edge of the water, laid out vertically.
I admit, I still don't have a grasp of how big a mm is, but 11mm did not seem too small, as I was shooting these at 400x and they were still small.
