Carpenter Bee/Wood Bee male

This isn't the greatest macro picture, but I wondered what in the world happened to this bee's wings. How much more damage can they take and still be able to fly? This is a huge bee (no stinger, is it really a bee?) of over 2 cm long. Is it physical damage from rubbing up against things, or has it been attacked by something?
It was taken natural light, Sony Alpha 200 with three cheap close-up lenses screwed on: +1, +2, and +4.

Here is something I noticed the stacking the three lenses causes. If I zoom out too far, I can see the lenses.

This one is just one that I thought was an interesting flower.
