Diplophrys

Post by Charles Krebs »

While so many of the small creatures we see under the microscope are wonderfully bizarre looking, few strike me as "science-fiction" looking as this small shelled amoeba, Diplophrys. From opposite side of the "shell" two branches of pseudopodia extend outward.
Sort of looks like a tiny macabre eyeball floating around

They can be easily overlooked as they are pretty small, and the pseudopodia are not all that visible.

Olympus 100/1.40 S Plan Apo, Canon 350D. DIC with electronic flash.
