Polyphemus Eyespot - 2nd image added

Post by NikonUser »

Recently Rik showed images of the "glassy spot" on the FW of a female Sachem
HERE
Apart from the Clearwing Sphinx Moths, which have almost scaleless wings, the classic group of lepidoptera having 'glassy spots' are the Giant Silkmoths (Fam: Saturniidae) where they are normally referred to as Eyespots.
Ken posted a nice image of a Polyphemus moth that cleary shows the eyespots on the FW and HW
HERE
Here is a closeup of the eyespot on the right FW showing the scaleless membrane surrounded by a ring of scales.

Very nice!

The "harder" light works great here.

Thanks Charles; yes a single flash from the side at a shallow angle works well for 'flat' objects.

Just tested Nikon's M Plan 20x ELWD microscope objective on a portion of the above wing.
At minimum extension on my bellows I can get as low as 15.3x mag on my 23.6mm sensor.
As to be expected from other images from this lens posted on PMG and from Charles' superb article
it performed exceptionally well
