The images look good.

I am puzzled by the title. Are these actually male and female, or is the title something of a joke?

Yes Rik,it is actually a kind of joke,you can see that both the hornets have the same number of "articles" on the antennas,so they are probably both male or female.
But for sure,one is bigger than the other!

Is there any significance as to which way their mandibles cross ? All my hornet images look like the one on the right - right mandible crossing in front of left.

I have just checked with a friend of mine that is an antomologist.He said both hornets are female because they have 12 pieces antennas.(Males have 13).
