Cyclosis in Tradescantia (Spiderwort) stamen hairs

Post by Franz Neidl »

One of my prefered objects for microscopy is the Tradescantia plant (with 71 species !). Very interesting is the fast movement in the cells of the stamen hairs. The stamen hairs are made from a chain of single cells ( http://scidiv.bellevuecollege.edu/rkr/B ... closis.pdf ).
First picture: the surface of the stamen hair cells

A classical subject for observation during botany courses. Makes me walking down memory lane: I remember examining under the microscope and drawing those.

Well documented, Franz!
