UV marks of Creeping Cinquefoil (Potentilla reptans)

Post by Franz Neidl »

You see the very clear UV marks of the small flower (2,6 cm diameter) from Potentilla reptans, the Creeping Cinquefouil.

Very well done Franz and the UV pattern gets clearly visible!
[personally I would have enhanced the gamma a bit, so the contrast raises, since that lens used transmits not much UV and has quite a low contrast...]

Cheers,
Klaus

Very nice documentation of the "Saftmal", Franz!

According to literature, the bee sees the inner "Saftmal" of P. reptans as pure yellow, sourrounded by the bee-purple outer parts of the petals.

Would you allow me to use these 2 pictures of yours for projection when I teach this in biology class? It would be a non-commercial use, and I would label it with "copyright and courtesy of Franz Neidl"?

Hallo Betty,
I would be very happy if you use it in school for teaching.
In the moment I dont understand very well how bees are seeing colours. This morning I found an interesting article (in German) from a scholar from nobelpricewinner V. Frisch. Maybe somebode is interested:

At Klaus's suggestion, I have split his reply, and the followups to it, off to a separate thread over in the Technique forum. It can be read HERE.
