echinoderm larvae part 2 - Starfish larva

Post by Wim van Egmond »

There are several stages. the bands you see are ciliated, used for locomotion. The V staped form in teh center is part of the mouth opening. The sphere under it is the gut. These larvae feed on small plankton organisms.

This was a pre Helicon stack from 4 or 5 slides.

Does not look anything like a starfish. What a dramatic change. Excellent Picture Wim

Must agree with Doug. Looks more like the carapace of some insect, a unique photograph though. I Googled "Brittle Star" since I have never seen one to get an idea of what you were presenting Wim. They are pretty colorful and neat looking starfish. :D
