Slime mould: Lycogala terrestre

Post by gpmatthews »

As always, please take the ident as tentative, but I thought Ken might like this, spotted today at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, in woodland, on an expedition with doktorstamp:

Image

For an organism described unpleasantly as a slime mould, this is rather a fetching colour...

Each globule is less than 1 cm across.

Though we lean upon the same balustrade, the colours of the mountain are different.

Ooh I found one of these in the garden yesterday, I thought it was some sort of fungus, it didn't occur to me it might be a slime mould! I must get that book recommended by Ken in another thread!!

Nice shot!

Yes those are Lycogala and they should turn a dark olive to dark olive brown here soon. When they do, take them home and open them up and place some of fiberous mass (capillitium) on a slide with the spores and take a peek through the microscope. Wonderful! :D
