Rössjöholm #2

Post by Erland R.N. »

I guess I should add a second series of pictures from my first real macro "trip" this year. I'm in Rössjöholm, a part of Sweden quite close to Denmark, and dominated by two lakes. But I'm staying in a small house, 40 meters from a small pond (maybe 30x80 meters) where there are lots of dragonflies.

This is an early morning photo series, which started with the first picture at 7:08 AM, and ended at 11:58 AM. It shows some of the photos I took of an emerging Downy Emerald, Cordulia aenea, on the 2. of May.

First the larvae, as I found it clinging on to some vegetation above the water.

Close to an hour later, it started breaking the exuvia above the thorax. The two pictures following, show every 3rd of 4th picture I took during the proces.

This is the most time I have ever invested in one single insect, close to five hours. It was a rather cold morning, resulting in this quite slow emergence.

Thankfully, food and coffee was only a minute away.

:D

Thank you for comments.

Some of the time was spent looking though the viewfinder or with the naked eye at this wonder at work. Remember to look, not only photograph, as I sometimes tend to. :)

This has got to be the best series of photographs I have ever seen. Well done Erland and thank you so much for sharing. It was definitely worth the hours you spent taking them.

Wow, what a wonderful series. I have never seen anything like this before.

I had this image in my head of you standing in the swamp up to your knees in cold water dedicated to bring us this phenomenal series. Then I read the last line about coffee being nearby. It is still a great series!
