Skipper

Post by Ken Ramos »

Seems as though I read somewhere that Skippers were not "true butterflies." Well what ever they are, they sure look like a butterfly to me.

It is amazing that this thing sat still as long as it did, perched atop the stem of a large dead weed, probably a dead Goldenrod and affording me these shots. :D

Thank you Aynia, I like both of them but the second does look better. In the first I was sneaking up behind it but as I did, it remained in place allowing for the second shot. :D

Both are awesome Ken. This Skipper has a splash of color to it. I think he was posing for you ken because I am trying real hard to remember if I have ever seen a skipper on anything other than a flower :-k. I like the second one better because of the cleaner green background and the pose of the skipper.

Very nice! :D

Bugs seen from the front always seem friendlier somehow.

Thanks guys. :D Yeah bugs from the front do seem a lot friendlier, unless your looking into the fangs of a Goliath spider. However the second, as Doug mentioned does have a cleaner and brighter background and appears much more cute.

It seems that Skippers are rather different from "true butterflies". Some of them fold their wings horizontally, like moths, others are intermediate. See:

The butterflies with six fully developed legs are the more primitive ones.

Nice catch! :)

Good control of the highlights in that hard light (I assume it was sunny)!

I do appreciate the artistical qualities in the second shot. Thumbs up!

Thanks Harold, Paticle_Man. I suppose that answers the difference between Skippers and true butterflies. That second shot was just luck and it was out in full bright sun. :D
