I suppose it is a fly, maybe one that has been or in the process of being parasitized, maybe even a very large aphid. It is alive by the way, about the size of a small housefly. I saw it move a couple of times. Anyway I thought I would post it to see if anyone had any other ideas.

Yes, an aphid that´s what it looks like to me too. The white powdery substance the body is covered in should be waxy secretions, which are quite common in aphids. To my knowledge over here our aphid species mostly overwinter as eggs or larvae but there might be other modes elsewhere. Or, depending on climate/vegetation the first winged migrating morphs may have already developed and be around there in the Carolinas.
