Stalactites

Post by leonardturner »

I was surprised when I came upon this in late December. Would you like to speculate on what it is?

Well, I guess it does look a little shaggy doggy, but no. Wrong kingdom; not an animal.

A fungus it is. Specifically, a mushroom. But not one I'd ever seen before. Instead of producing spores on gills underneath the cap, the "Bearded Tooth" Hericium, as I believe this to be, produces spores on the down hanging "teeth".

This one was about 11 inches from left to right, large enough to catch my eye from a good distance away. It appeared after a very rainy spell in late December, and was gone a short time later.
