Owlfly

Post by SteveB »

Here's an owlfly I photographed in the Karoo in December. I'm quite intrigued by this family of insects at the moment.

When I started to process and stack the picture, I noticed the eyes. I don't think I have seen any other insect with eyes like that. It's almost as if they're bifocal! Here's a crop.

I know they're predatory insects, capturing other smaller insects in flight. Does anyone know if they have a sort of close focus looking foreword for hunting, and a more distant peripheral view to avoid predators themselves?
