Coup de gras
This shows the bite, delicately delivered, from a black-and-yellow argiope 'garden spider' (Argiope aurantia). The grasshopper is a differential grasshopper (Melanoplus differentialis). I was pretty happy about the timing of this picture since events were happening rather fast.

I can't say it was 'rare'. I was visiting my mother in Iowa, and at a pond in a nearby park there were many of these spiders in webs along the margin of the pond. Grasshoppers were rapidly moving away from my approach, and it is pretty common that some wind up jumping into the webs as a result.Lou Jost wrote:A nice rare action shot!
