Sunset Moth Scale at 31.25X

I think the 0.42NA of my Mitutoyo 50X is just not enough for 50X, but putting it on a Raynox 250, yielding 31.25X magnification seems to be better.

Know what you mean. Empty magnification goes up quicker than resolution with objectives. Frustrating. The 50x M Plan APO Mitty is N.A. 0.55 - do you have a different sort?
