At Beatsy's suggestion, I went to a SLOWER shutter speed and lower ISO.

That was shot at a 25u step size. It might have been a little better at a smaller step size.

Lighting has been probably the hardest thing to master.

I've made all kinds of diffusion mechanisms, but it turns out that the thing that worked the best was two nested, cutoff foam cups slipped over the objective. That is literally the last thing which I would have suspected.

I was a little under the weather today so I didn't get the chance, but between tomorrow and Sunday, I plan to take a hypodermic needle (as a manipulator) and a magnifying glass and try to flip him over for another stack.
