Looking for advice on achieving 10-20x (FF+100mm2.8L)

Post by MacroLab3D »

HI. I read a lot of topics and still not sure which option best for me.

I have Canon 5DII (Full frame sensor) with MP-E65 and Cognisys macro rails. And i feel like 5X is not enough magnification anymore. I wish i can go to 10-20X. Also MP-E65 blocking a lot of light at 5X.

I have Canon 100mm 2.8L Macro Lens, also i have 24-70L zoom lens.

As far as i understood,
Nikon 10x Plan Achromat Infinity Objective Part # MRL00102
will give me same 5X but with better quality and less light block. Which is not worth switching IMHO.

Would you be so kind and give me the best option to date?

Thanks!

10x/0.25 is F1.8 lens, ulike mp-e 65 which is 2.8. Big difference imo. 10x/0.25 goes up to 10x with no big deal. Also 10x/0.25 is sharpest at widest aperture, is Mp-e like that?

You can get away with using your 100mm f2.8L macro as a "tube lens" with APS-C and smaller sensors. But there is a good possibility you will not be satisfied with the edge and corner quality when used on a full frame camera.

With a 200mm tube lens the particular objective you referenced should give you a good 10X on a full-frame sensor. How much lower you can go (with a shorter focal length tube lens) is something you will need to try and see for yourself.

Thank you for your opinions, JohnyM and Charles.

This is what i am going to do:

Buy 10x/.25, together with adapter to my 100mm, so i can start to learn new gear with dark corners and 5X but still.
Later i am going to add Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM to replace 100mm and get full frame 10X. And later (one can dream) hopefully add here A7RII.

This 200mm lens is going to work? No one tested those?

Thank you.

I'm nearly certain someone on the forum has used, or uses, that lens. I can't remember who, but if I recall correctly the results were very good. But I do not recall the format used. I think some searching should find it.

A big question about using camera lenses for tube lenses has to do with their construction. If the "entrance pupil" is deep in the lens (far from the front) it may not be a good lens to use as a "tube lens". This is especially true with a 24x36mm sensor.

I haven't used the specific objective you're asking about, but have used the Canon 70-200 IS L II as a tube lens for a 10x Mitty and a Nikon CF Plan 5/0.13 in the past.

It worked fine with those. If you're using the tele at 200mm, I don't think there would be any problem with vignetting - the tele certainly won't cause it (but I suppose the objective might). Not sure if this helps at all, but some samples here...

Edit: oops - just noticed the first link is showing results from a crop-sensor 7d, so not relevant to your question. Ignore that one.
