Red Namibian sand

Here are some grains of red sand from the Namibian desert.

It's mostly quartz that has a fine coating of "Hematite", a red oxide of iron. You can see thicker areas of the iron oxide in the crevices on the grains.

I used incident light and low intensity transmitted cross polarised light. It's a stacked image with the background cleaned up in photoshop.
