Wintertime butterflies
Plan achro 4X on Labophot, crossed polarizers. The crystals are drying Kodak (Ilford doesn't work!) rapid fixer.

Thanks, Pitufo. When I first began playing with crystals, I had the naive hope that different chemical would provide different looking crystals, perhaps to the extent of being able to identify as least some substances by their crystals. Such certainly appears not to be the case (at least not without knowing the context of where the crystal was found, as in uric acid crystals in joint fluid). Part of the fun of crystal formation is the process, watching as they evolve, but this doesn't lend itself well to presentation here. Perhaps the best demonstration without resorting to video is a montage, and this is what I have tried with the image below--all of which are forms of the hypo crystals as they come out of solution. After prolonged drying, they take a much less dramatic form.
I would be interested in anyone's comments on this; there is clearly a great deal I don't know.

Well, Chris, it was Part A and Part B mixed, used, and aged (there's been no wet work in the darkroom for some time now). The Ilfofix was also a veteran of distant wars, so both fixers contained silver salts as well as their original components.
Maybe if we subtracted the chemical components the two have in common from the Kodak we could speculate what made the latter work, but I don't think I'm up to it!
