Butterfly foot (stereo added)
Been a while. Here's a 120-image focus stack of the underside of a butterfly's foot. Shot with a 20x Mitty on a 135mm tube lens with the camera in APS-C crop mode. The final image was cropped further and covers a FoV roughly 1.5mm wide. I've included a snap of the butterfly it came from too.
This specimen was from a box of several dead butterflies kindly supplied on request by Stratford butterfly farm when I visited last week. Never thought to ask on previous visits - doh!

Re: Butterfly foot
Wow!!! Great detail and colors and so crisp it looks 3d.

Quite remarkable! The structures are shown in such clear detail. Makes me wonder if there might be nontrivial molecular forces at play that permit butterflies to hang off surfaces, like what we know about geckos, or if it is primarily mechanical forces responsible.
One question about the image--does anyone agree that there's some haloing effect around the bristles, like what one may see if using DMap in Zerene? How to deal with these? I have found it quite difficult to overcome this phenomenon in my stacking efforts.

Thanks for the comments everyone.hero wrote: One question about the image--does anyone agree that there's some haloing effect around the bristles, like what one may see if using DMap in Zerene? Well spotted. This is just a DMAP stack with no retouching and a little trimming of background and haze in affinity - and levels, curves, clarity, etc. Quite a DMAP-friendly subject at web-resolution, surprisingly. I'll try a stereo soon...
