Collembola, furcula

Post by Ken Ramos »

Collembola shaken from lichen thallus into petri dish containing 70% rubbing alcohol. If you can't get them to sit still, get them in a drunken stupor.

Alcohol

Post by Olympusman »

Use use almost pure grain alcohol. With aquatic mites you have to patient for them to get drunk enough to sit still and then you have to act fast before they ball up like a fist pulling their legs in under their bodies.

Being an arachnid, I take it that they are somewhat similar to spiders in drawing up their legs once the heart shuts down, of course that resulting in a major hydraulic failure. I have some grain alcohol around here somewhere it was only by chance that the rubbing alcohol was handy and so I gave it a dousing. Thanks Mike :D
