What about a Mitutoyo 5X Inf 200mm brought down to ~4X with a 160mm tube lens?

Best,

Mike
Hi Mike,

I was going to try to stay away from the Mity, but I do have a 4X. What is a good 160mm tube lens? I have a Raynox 6x, thats 170mm, that would be what 4.25x?

Robert
Robert,

Didn't know Mitty had a 4X in the Inf 200mm category. If so, then you just need a 200mm for a tube lens. The Raynox 150 (208mm) works well, as does the old Nikon 200mm F4 "Q" lens, both are not expensive.

The Mitty 5X will require something around 160mm, so maybe your Raynox 170 would work. A old 135mm F3.5 Vivitar (Komine) or Ziess Zena work well on a DX sensor, but only give 3.375X. Think you have a Sigma 150mm that might work, this would give 3.75X.

Best,

Mike

Robert,

this gonna be very interesting comparison, thanks for taking your time for doing it. There are many lenses/objectives that works very well at around 4X. For instance the Mitu 5 and the tiny JML 21/3.5 would come out very well in this comparison if you include them.

Lol at putting a Plan Fluor objectives in the "Low End " list though :P

It was ranked by price paid, not in image quality, LOL :D I fixed it now.

The 4X PlanAPO finite, new style, almost made it on the low end list also.

Some seller on Ebay had a box of them for sale, 4 units for $500. or one for $150-175. He didn't even know what they were used for

I almost felt bad buying one due to dodgy origin. I hesitated for awhile, about 5 seconds at least, before I hit buy-it-now! :P

Who ends up with a box of APO objectives?

BTW, the image circle of the 4X PlanAPO finite, new style, seems to be even smaller than the infinity 4X Plan APO on a quick check.

Makes sense now :D For our luck, there are many people on eBay who have no idea what they are selling  Those boxes most likely comes from Factory/Lab surplus, liquidations, Estate sales, etc...

To be fair, Plan Fluor ("semi-apo") objectives should be ranked in an intermediate category between Achro and Apo because of correction and NA.

I haven't made direct comparison, but image circle is at least as small as the CF N version, or maybe smaller...

Hi Omer,

Yes, all of the parts for the test are here, camera, flash, remote, lenses. I even ran a quick test and that came out great.

I am only waiting for for a machinist friend to finish milling anti-twist notches in the extension tube clamps I am using. I came up with a low-cost set up, using the cheapest parts on Ebay, to support my extension tubes for a set-up that I hope will be rigid like a rock and easily configurable.

I think you will like the new set-up!

All the best,

Robert

I am looking forward to see the results!

Bytheway did you include the Lomo 3.7 lens to your comparison list?

Thanks.

What about the Zhongyi Optics, Mitakon 20mm f/2 4.5X Super Macro Lens?

I could provide you a JML 21/3.5

Hi Lothar,

Super idea but its too late, I already finished shooting and I am now processing the images. :(

I do have some good news, the Lomo 3,7,thanks to Zzffnn, performed great on an APS-C sensor. The level of CA control was surprising and center sharpness was nice! I was surprised. I am glad I included it.

All the best,

Robert

Sounds like me, I found I had three 17s!

The 17 is not a bad performer BTW.

I have configured several systems with Tominons. I pick them up when they are in good shape and going cheap, so have a box full of 17's, 35's, 50's, 75's, 105's, and a few 135's. Plus I have a few Rodenstock Eurygon 35's. They're good lenses but have that pesky 40mm Copal thread. Usually it makes sense to make the system ALL MP3/4-based because of this. I even had Raf make me some Vivitar adapters that go from the 48mm dovetail on the Vivitar bellows to M40, to minimize and simplify adapting. It allows the Vivitar bellows to be short enough to frame a Lincoln Cent with the 50mm, which is a fairly nice lens.
