Nikon / Rayfact MJ90 f/4 some tests

Post by nathanm »

Here are some tests from the Rayfact MJ90 f/4 which is a lens designed for large line scan sensors at low mag 0.05X to 0.5X.

I am using it on a PhaseOne XF100, 100 megapixel back on a custom rig described in other posts.

Here is a crop from the center of the frame which is quite good in my view.

The extreme corner of the frame has good resolution but shows some color fringing due to CA

So, I think this is a decent performer but not something amazing. Which is too bad because Rayfact is from the Nikon subsidiary that makes the legendary Printing Nikkor lenses.

What magnification are you at?

Did you find and differences in performance throughout the range?

Could you post corner results for a what one would see on a 36x24 sensor and 44x33 sensor?

Interested how it does on smaller formats.

Are results comparable to the Rayfact OEM 95mm f4 lens? Do you think they are optically similar or identical?

I have been working on testing the Rayfact 2x-5x lens, I will get to testing the Rayfact 95mm f/4 soon.

I've seen a Rayfact graph that rates the OEM 95mm f4 lens for around 9-10micron sensors. Also confirmed by an email from Rayfact.

Of course it can be used for smaller pixel pitches but this is where the issues kick in.

Quote from the US distributor for the Rayfact MJ90 is $1475. Some of the auction prices for this lens are outrageous. It's quite a few steps down the ladder from a Printing Nikkor.

The MJ90 is a quality lens that performs well for its intended use but is really only suited for an older 9 micron sensor. It would be a good match for a Phase One H25 or P25 sensor both of which have 9 micron pixels and require larger image circles.

OK thanks, I had feared that. My sensor has less than half that, so would not make sense.
