Interesting article. Cooling all this down to 20 Kelvin must require an enormous cryogenic cooler system since I remember what we had to do to get our tiny Mercury Cadmium Telluride sensors down to ~60 Kelvin with Split-Cycle Sterling coolers!!

Used to work with some of the brilliant folks involved with the design and build of this telescope and others that were involved with Hubble, so this is of particular interest.

Precision active vibration cancelling systems have been utilized in advanced semiconductor fabrication for some time now, so not totally surprised it's found it's way into other applications. Evidently the fundamental concepts of active vibration control date back to the 1950's.
