Only 8 by 8 pixel so far, but the principle is interesting, and the design is truly lensless. It could make imaging easier in the far UV and far IR, where lenses are difficult and expensive to build, and allows a sub-millimeter thick complete digital imaging system on a chip.

Very interesting stuff going on in these areas, I know these folks well.
This is a logical move down in wavelength as phased array chips in the microwave and millimeter wave area have been discussed since 2001, and we were invited to publish in the IEEE Proceedings in Sept 2005, "Smart Phased Array SoCs: A Novel Application for Advanced SiGe HBT BiCMOS Technology".

You also might check on Al Molnar & Albert Wang work from Cornell back in Jan. 2012 in IEEE Solid State Journal "A Light-Field Image Sensor in 180nm CMOS". They were awarded the best paper of the year on a sensor chip design that you focus post process.
