Tabanidae compound eye

Tabanidae compound eye

This is a Tabanidae compound eye. The eye have something on it so my intended "clean" 5x picture was not possible. First picture with Nikon BD DIC plan 5x NA 0.1 and LED light. Second picture, stereo and 3D model with Nikon BD plan apo 40x NA 0.8 and polarized EPI light. I wanted to have surface reflection so this is the opposite from crossed polarized. The picture is 0.36mm wide, indicating that one lens is aprox. 0.03 mm.

Very nice images! I never get tired of studying insect eyes. So beautifully designed and elegant. Thanks for sharing.
