The "leather effect"on the handrest on these microscopes can break down into a tacky mess over time. The base plastic moulding is actually coated with a softer material, and it's this stuff which causes the problem.
Take a tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), mix to a paste with a little water and apply vigorously on a cloth.
Keep rubbing until all the darker layer is removed.
Rinse well, dry thoroughly, and polish up with T-cut.
