Big Beetle!

Post by Deanimator »

I saw this guy as I was coming home from the grocery store.

It looked like it was about to rain, but I had to get stuff into the refrigerator. Right after I finished, a downpour started.

After the rain stopped, I went outside to see if he was still there and he was.

He was underneath an air conditioner, making it impossible for me to get closer due to me flash diffuser hitting the bottom of the air conditioner.

Now that is a formidable looking beetle. Don't know what kind it is but it sure looks like it would deliver a painful grasp. Great shots though! :smt023

Thanks.

He was extremely docile. He moved ONE of his legs the whole time I took pictures of him.

Apparently, it's a reddish-brown stag beetle, AKA "pinching beetle".

Yes. This is a male stag beetle, Lucanus capreolus. The large mandibles of the males are used in combat with other males as they contest over getting access to females (who do not have the big mandibles).
