May Bug, experimental rocking 3D video +bonus Cross View 3D.

Post by MacroLab3D »

Hi.

I made a video inspired by Zerene stereo rocking ability. And i need your opinion on this. Do you think it is watchable? Which you prefer more: Cross View or Rocking?

May Bug shot in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, done using Canon 5DII, MP-E65, Stackshot 3X, Zerene Stacker PMAX, 70-110 shots per frame, f4-5, 3 led lights, diffuser, edited in After Effects.

Rocking: https://youtu.be/ofmP_SehUbw
CrossView: https://youtu.be/WkkgftQQGdw
Parallel, SBS: https://youtu.be/44lPOpVuaxI

Thanks!

Wow - the video looks like it took a shedload of work to produce. Nice result! It's plenty watchable. Only comment would be to ask if the rocking might be a little better with more steps added - perhaps 5 total? Just to smooth out the transition from one "view angle" to the other.

I really like the way you used the video to pan and zoom around the picture too. Great way to show details that often get lost in downsized, single images. I am so stealing that idea - soon... :D

Cheers

Yay, Beatsy, i am glad you noticed all points of this video! I am happy to know this has potential, thanks! As for 5 steps i am afraid i don't know how to implement more than 3 ..yet, but you have a good point. Other people asked for slower rocking instead. Hmm. To me it is perfect as it's now because i have tested it faster and slower and to my taste it is shows both depth and details this way. Make it slower and you will lost depth, make it faster and you will lost details.

As for pans, turns out it was a bad idea if i want to watch this in VR. It is nausea inducing. NOT FOR VR :D. Next time i will try to avoid it.

Also curious to know which format you prefer - Rocking or CrossView?

Crossview also was best for me, but all were wonderful!

Very nice idea! Cross view was very interesting to watch with the panning and zooming.

All are brilliant. Without a viewer I find diverging my eyes less comfortable than crossing which works well for me. Rocking was annoying at first, - until I stopped thinking about it - , then it seemed fine!

What's the software for the zooming/panning?

Thanks all for your opinions. So i listened and made another test, this time with 10 steps (2 steps was previously):

Cactus: https://youtu.be/a2Wx04xui48

I like the smoother rocking. Very nice pair of 3d animations! Interesting to see how the minor stacking artefacts propogate in places too. A few clues on how to avoid "the fuzzies" there (posing to get the best relative placement of overlapping features depending on their z-distance apart).

I find the rocking + panning very good to watch, now. It's conveying a lot of information :smt023

Thank you, Beatsy. This is helpful, but in same time i don't want to depend on pose. I don't want to think about it at all, preferably :) Hopefully Rik will fix this soon.

I am glad you like it, Chris. Still experimenting. Not perfect and disturbing at times. Here i did another video:

Critique appreciated and welcome.

Great video. The detail in the images is top notch.
I'm in Canada! Isn't that weird?
