Crocus 2017 (added stereo versions)
When these bloom by my front steps in late February I always pick one or two every year and photograph the "interior". Here are a few for 2017.
All with MM-11/Olympus hybrid scope, Olympus M plan fluorites (5X, 10X, 20X and 50X). Canon T3i.
The individual pollen grains are about 90 microns (0.0035 inch) in diameter.

Lovely stereo!
(The second one may have a little too much separation. It gives great depth, but I perceive the pollen grains as oval, more depth than width, and I doubt that they really are.)
On the other hand, it's great that synthetic stereo lets us do either one from the same stack, no re-shooting required.

I think of the issue as being a matter of how display space gets used. Monitors have aspect ratios from about 5:4 to about 16:9. With side by side stereo, if all the pixels are used then for sure each side will be portrait, even on a widescreen monitor. But switch to shutter glasses, and the situation reverses. It's very frustrating!with the 1024 pixel limit vertical makes a better experience.
