Yet another fly

Post by Beatsy »

I accidentally stuck the back legs together while mounting this one on the twig (attempting to better fix the pin coming in from underneath). Seemed a shame to waste it though so here's a stack done with MP-E 65mm @ 2.2x.

You have the MP-E as well?!! What are your thoughts on that lens?
I'm in Canada! Isn't that weird?

MP-E is the best zoom macro in the world! I really should use it more often but get distracted by higher mags too much. It gives sharp images to the corners on full frame and is ideal for 1x to about 3.5x, after that, it's slightly edged out by a 5x mitty for sharpness/resolution and the fat front end can limit lighting a bit - but it's still no slouch right up to 5x (and more with an extender).

Another advantage is the ability to close down the aperture a little for more DoF and less stacking issues. Picking up ChrisR's point - the tiny eye-hairs came out much better using the MP-E at f/4.0 than they would have with an objective. I find that a smaller aperture has less of a tendency to see round corners on deeper stacks such that already-rendered detail is obliterated (requiring retouching).

Oh, and the MP-E is absolutely brilliant for lizard feet!

Nice shot!

I have Nikon, so the Canon lens does me no good :)

As for lizard feet, I am working on it. Very tough.

I use mine on a Sony A7RII (Metabones IV adapter), but I think the flange distance thing stops adapting to Nikon. Shame. I was just trying to tip you into an extra bit of G.A.S. with the lizard feet comment :)
