Hi everybody,
some views of giant chromosomes of Chironome's larva. the stain is "vert de méthyle acétique"(what's the english name?).picture are a bit noisy cause lack of light with stain,and neatimage do not work (lost details).

Good grief -- these chromosomes are huge!

I presume that "Chironome" are midge larvae, family Chironomidae, as described here in Wikipedia.

I believe the English term for the stain is just "methyl green". AltaVista translates "vert de méthyle acétique" as "acetic methyl green", but as I understand it, methyl green must always be used in acid solution, often acetic acid. Google quickly found this old (1900!) but very readable reference.

The pictures are very good, no problem at all with the noise. :D

Hi Rik,
yes,it's this larva,the same than these of Charles's pictures.
giant chromosomes come from salivary glands.
perhap's Charles will produce some exquisite pictures ? :wink:
