Mating candy-striped leafhoppers

Post by MarkSturtevant »

This is one of our familiar species of ‘sharpshooter’ leafhoppers, and here we have a demonstration that even an insect that is common in the plain old midwest of the U.S. can still be spectacular. Among the common names of this species (Graphocephala coccinea) is the candy-striped leafhopper. The female of this mating pair can be identified as she is the one with the sword-like ovipositer at the end of her abdomen.

That's a spectacular image!! I remember those leafhoppers from my childhood in Wisconsin, and I still haven't seen a leafhopper as pretty as them here in the tropics.

Thanks. They are fairly common, and there are related species with different but also eye-catching colors.
