I have not taken much recently so was going through images I had passed over initially and with a crop this hoverfly came out better than I first thought.

Definitely not a reject Dave. Hoverflies are one of my favourite subjects and IMO you've done a fine job with this one. Focus and exposure on the fly is spot-on, with very fine detail evident from the antenna to the tip of the abdomen. The stigma and stamens just in front of the fly's head seem a little soft, but I've always found bright yellow flowers to be one of the most challenging subjects when it comes to bringing out detail. As it happens, in this instance it helps to highlight detail on the fly's head.
