A single ray of sunshine managed to work its way through the dense canopy to provide natural backlighting for this defensive display of a leaf-mimicking katydid (Pterochroza ocellata):

The salamander shot makes me think of the pain that goes into the shots. I almost don't think i have been taking pictures unless i have been bitten or stung by something. It looks like the salamander is suffering similarly, it certainly has some kind of mosquito on it, but is there also a leach just above its right hind leg? The presence of these little bugs adds atmosphere for me, tells me about how it would be sitting there in its environment and how glad i would be for insect repellent whilst searching for insects
