Need help in purchasing the right equipment. Please help

Post by jwd »

I currently volunteer to help with photographing gems and minerals at local gem and mineral club. We would like to photograph minerals and specimens that the children collect on field trips, and photograph the mineral inclusions that are in the minerals that were collected by members of the club. This will help our club educate the children and the community during our shows. Please help with any recommendations, as they will be greatly appreciated by all the members.

Current equipment:

EOS Rebel SL1 EF-S 18-55mm

Our goal of the project is:

1.) Photograph gem, mineral specimens as well as cabochons and jewelry designed by members.

2.) Photograph minerals at 10X to show mineral inclusions.

After reading over some post I noticed the variety of options for us to choose from. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... hp?t=24891

1.) Teleconverters + macro lens

2.) extension tubes + macro lens

Equipment currently looking to purchaseneed need recommendations:

Good quality micro lens for photographing gem and mineral as well as club members cabochon and jewelry designs.

Some questions we have:
How much magnification can you achieve before you lose a 1 mm depth of field?

What are some good combinations that work together with a micro lens? That will maintain sharpness and color accuracy while increasing magnification.

Can Ninfinite objective be used with micro lenses? Or do they need to be used with zoom only?

Thank you for your help

jwd, this is much the same question as elsewhere - there's no point posting twice, really, I suggest you use the other thread which has more answers.

Unfortunately most of the answers to your questions are "it depends".

I'll find the other thread and answer specifics there.
